Temperature Sensors

Special industrial techniques are required where demanding ambient conditions are encountered. This particularly applies to outside applications in power engineering, materials handling and robotics. Availability of suitable products for these applications is of key significance.

In harsh ambient conditions, expensive machine downtime is never completely avoidable. Mechanical or thermal wear can be controlled by a well planned maintenance regime. Most downtime is caused by unpredictable malfunctions, one major cause of which is high thermal load. REISSMANN thermal sensors monitor the thermal situation in electric drives, providing crucial data for timely reactions and consequent reduction in down time.

Thermal sensor technology: tough and highly sensitive.

Facilities that experience hard ambient conditions require sensors that are at least as robust as all other components, used on the application.

Robustness and precision of the measurement and recording as well as reliability even under high load - at first glance these would appear to be a pair of opposites, but it accurately represents the requirements towards temperature sensors that are operated under harsh conditions.

At the corresponding measuring positions of high-performance drive systems – for example in the windings of coils - very high pressing pressures can develop, which demand a high mechanical strength from the probes. This does not only concern the sensors themselves, but also their supply lines. Here, pressure-induced constrictions can lead to voltage breakdowns. The reliable recording of actual values would be guaranteed any more then.

Thermal sensor »KTY 84-130, 83-110« is the PTC-Si-sensor specifically designed for use under hard ambient conditions.

REISSMANN has developed a special profile for the PTC-Si-thermal sensor KTY 84-130, 83-110 using practical experience gained from applications in, electric drive technology for wind energy plants, materials handling equipment, robotics and industrial trucks, as outlined below.

  • Effective protection against breakage of the sensor glass encapsulation.
  • Inner design of the sensor according to the spreading resistance principle.
  • Protection of the supply line against high forming pressures.
  • Optimum thermal transmission from low thermal response time.
  • Resistant to aggressive gases or liquids.
  • Impulse withstand voltage up to 8000V (DIN EN 50178).
  • Consequential safeguarding against electrostatic charge.

Working closely with users and producers of cables and other ancillary electronic components has enabled us to design a silicium sensor that reaches the standards of the defined profile at an optimal price-performance-delivery-ratio.

The KTY 84-130, 83-110 is characterised by a long, permanently high precision, product life, which retains its linear characteristics even under difficult ambient conditions. The reinforced high strength electrical insulation of the feed line guarantees a high resistance against aggressive media. An additional, special high tension double electrical insulation, prevents damage to the outer insulation casing, by constriction of the coilwindings and the resultant pressures from these.

Extensive field-tests completed successfully: The »KTY 84-130, 83-110« has proven itself in practice.

Before the start of series production, the temperature sensors of the series "KTY 84-130, 83-110" have undergone extensive testing in practice during field experiments.

The well-known user-companies that REISSMANN was able to win over for this test phase, did not register any malfunctions at all. The guaranteed properties remained constant, even for harsh installation requirements.

Today the KTY 84-130, 83-110 sensors are in full standard production and have proven their value as a monitoring system for the windings, bearings and carbon brushes of electrical drives in a wide range of applications – even in saline cleaning processes with high humidity and temperatures between −50 and +260°C.

Qualified skilled employees working within specially protected production and test zones guarantee constantly high production quality.

The production of KTY-sensors (ESD- electrostatic sensitive devices.) requires a specially protected process which includes effective preventive measures.

Accordingly the complete protection and test area is equipped and labelled as an ESD-protection area according to DIN EN 61340. Electrostatic conductive floor and table systems, centrally earthed, prevent electrostatic damage to the KTY-sensors. Logically all people within these areas are also effectively earthed.

The effectiveness of this equipment is guaranteed by regular testing with special measurement equipment. Continuous training courses keep the knowledge and qualification of our employees, in this sensitive production and quality area, up to date. This quality assurance concept continues throughout all processes, including stocking, packaging, despatch and transport.
